We are looking for volunteers willing to give a little time a week to support people with mental health problems. Travel is involved, so a current and valid driving licence is necessary, along with access to your own vehicle.
The role of the Mental Health Advocate is to support clients who, because of mental health problems, require an advocate to access the services they need. This will ensure that clients have greater choice and control over their lives, both now and in the future.
Mental Health Advocate volunteers will work with both detained and informal patients to empower and enable them to express their individual needs, rights and choices. Supporting informal clients on wards, supporting as a second person on initial client visits and following up referrals in the community.
Swan Advocacy is a charity working throughout Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, Somerset and BaNES, providing advocacy services to those in society who need help to speak up for themselves.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Organisational and planning skills, including time and resource management.
Effective interpersonal skills, with an empathy and understanding different life experiences.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Some experience working in mental health would be preferred.
By working alongside a qualified and experienced advocate, you will gain an understanding for the important role advocates play in giving people a voice. This role will develop your listening and negotiating skills, through liaising with various professionals.
