Description

We are small local charity that built and runs a community hydrotherapy pool in Frome, Somerset for those with physical disabilities, sensory, behavioural or learning difficulties, a life threatening illness (e.g. cancer) or a limiting condition (e.g. rheumatism or fibromyalgia). It is available to all ages, from babies to the elderly.

To keep the facility in tip top condition we have a wonderful group of six volunteers who test the water and air temperature and chemical levels a few times a day. We are looking for 12 to 20 more volunteers so that each would only need to do a test slot once a week or fortnight.

In many respects this is the most important role at the hydrotherapy pool: without water testers we would have to close the pool that day or week which would lead to major disappointment to our hundreds of users who look forward to their time in the pool as the highlight of their week.

The most rewarding part of being involved in water testing at the hydro is seeing our inspirational users who face more challenges in life than most, smiling from ear to ear as they enjoy their therapy in the sparkling warm water - that you are helping to keep in that condition.

It may sound a little daunting but chemistry degrees are not required! Testing involves filling a small bottle with water from the pool, putting a test tablet into it and shaking the bottle to dissolve the tablet. The bottle is popped into an electric monitor that gives the level of chlorine in the water. We also take the temperature of the water and air. Full training is given and the testing team is backed up by a professional pool company. The equipment at Harry's Hydro is fully automatic.

Hydrotherapy is physiotherapy undertaken in an environment of warm water and high air temperature, the combination of which relaxes the patient and eases pain, which frees the user to move in ways they cannot on land. The pool and environment at these warm temperatures is also very effective for those with learning difficulties as it satisfies and calms their sensory needs thus allowing them to use the more complex thinking and communication parts of the brain.

The pool is in memory of local boy Harry Fox who died aged 13 months.
