Glastonbury Windmill Hill Youth Club is always looking for people to join the team to help support young people on Wednesday evenings. We are a thriving club with lots of activities and events. Throughout its youth clubs YMCA Mendip delivers a curriculum of learning led by young people in creative engaging formats. These range from health and wellbeing, politics, relationships and personal safety to our relationship with the wider world. Volunteers enable us to offer even more to the young people at the clubs.
Why not contact us for an informal chat and perhaps after assessment and induction come along for some taster sessions to see if it’s for you?
You could do as little or as much as suits you. Get involved meeting and greeting, making our visitors feel welcome, building relationships with the young people, general youth work, signposting, giving advice, helping to manage boundaries and behaviour, the running of the club, or offer to help with a specific activity like sport, music, self-defence or cooking.
A commitment of even just six weeks could really make a difference. You would be offered training, mentored by a member of the staff team and those willing to commit to a longer placement could potentially train to a competency level where paid employment could be an option. We have had many of our volunteers progress to become paid youth workers.
There are also opportunities to volunteer in youth clubs in Coleford, Frome, Shepton Mallet, Red Brick Building Glastonbury, Street and Yeovil.
YMCA Mendip has been operating from Wells since 1892 and we now deliver and support a wide range of services, mostly for young people, across the whole of Mendip and also in South Somerset. We’re a fully autonomous independent local charity working for the people of Mendip and South Somerset with a main focus on young people and specialising in housing and homelessness issues.
YMCA Mendip support young people aged 16-25, who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, with supported housing projects, Grace Harris House (Shepton Mallet), Frome Foyer, Street Foyer and new projects in Yeovil. We also have supported accommodation for homeless adults in Spencer House (Wells). We support homeless people and those at risk of homelessness to access private rented accommodation and to maintain their tenancies once housed.
In addition to this YMCA Mendip provides youth clubs and drop ins across Mendip and more recently in Yeovil too. These include Routes Drop in Centre and Café in Frome, Frome Youth and Community Centre providing a range of services to the community and young people and Street Young Peoples Centre, a hub of services for young people. We have Youth Clubs at Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Frome, Yeovil and Coleford.
Volunteers enable us to further enrich the work we do with young people and vulnerable adults, for which we are extremely grateful. If you decide to apply you will be making a real difference to our mission to respond to young peoples’ needs, particularly in terms of homelessness and housing.
Although we are part of the worldwide YMCA movement we are self-funded and grateful to the many people and voluntary groups that help us with contributions and donations (and their time) as well as our partners with whom we have contracts.
This role would suit a non-judgemental, fairly proactive person with good listening skills, who is interested in supporting young people.
It’s good for anyone seeking a route into paid youth work or relevant work experience for their cv or similarly for someone who wants to give back a little. All volunteers are given an enhanced DBS check, training and support as well as invites to YMCA Mendip events.
